Viet Nam’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector has marked a new milestone with the first participation of TVET colleges in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, a global benchmark for sustainability and green campus development.
Initiated by the University of Indonesia in 2010, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings assess higher education institutions based on six core criteria: setting and infrastructure; energy and climate change; waste management; water management and conservation; sustainable transportation; and education and research for sustainable development.
As of 2025, the ranking attracted 1,745 universities and colleges from 105 countries worldwide. Of these, 1,547 institutions were eligible for ranking results, including 115 colleges (7.43% of those assessed) and 1,432 universities (92.57%).
The 2025 results, announced on 5 December 2025, recorded the participation of 11 Vietnamese education institutions, comprising seven universities and four colleges. Notably, three TVET colleges joined the ranking for the first time, with technical support from GIZ Viet Nam.
The College of Machinery and Irrigation (VCMI) ranked 932nd globally, followed by LILAMA 2 International Technology College at the 1,113th place and Bac Ninh College of Industry at 1,246th. The results reflect strong commitment and sustained efforts by the colleges to advance green transition and sustainable campus development.
Participating in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings and the achievements attained are aligned with the orientation of the amended Law on Vocational Education and Training (2025) and the Politburo’s Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in education and training developmentm, which emhasizes the need to enhance the quality, effectiveness, sustainability and adaptability of TVET system in the context of green transition and digital transformation.
Following the ranking, GIZ Viet Nam, with funding from the Study and Skilled Workers Fund (SFF), organised a training workshop titled “Applying the UI GreenMetric Indicators in Green Transformation at TVET Institutes” from 17–18 December 2024 a leading Vietnamese university with many years of experience participating in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, ranked first among Vietnamese education institutions in 2025. The workshop aimed to support the wider adoption of UI GreenMetric indicators across the TVET system.
The event brought together 28 focal points for green transition and quality assurance from 13 TVET colleges. Participants were introduced to the structure, objectives, and relevance of the UI GreenMetric framework in the context of Viet Nam’s TVET system. The training also provided practical guidance on data collection, verification, and analysis, helping institutions identify priority areas for improvement and establish databases for regular monitoring and evaluation.
Together, the ranking results and follow-up capacity-building activities highlighted growing momentum in greening Viet Nam’s TVET sector and strengthened its engagement with international sustainability standards.
